Skills settings

Skills give the Assistant reusable, task-specific instructions, so it handles particular kinds of request the way your team wants them done. For example, a skill could tell the Assistant how to write product descriptions in your brand's tone, or which fields to fill in when it creates a campaign banner.

Go to Settings > Automation > Skills to see the built-in skills and add your own.

How skills work

Each skill has a description that says what it's for. When you ask the Assistant to do something, it compares your request with the skill descriptions and loads a skill only when the request matches. Skills that aren't relevant to a request aren't used, so you can add as many as your team needs.

You don't need to name a skill in your request. Ask the Assistant for what you want in plain language, and it picks the right skill for you.

Add your own skills when you want the Assistant to follow your team's processes, style or rules.

A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file, which has:

  • A name and description at the top of the file. The description tells the Assistant when to use the skill.
  • Instructions in the body of the file, written in Markdown, telling the Assistant how to carry out the task.

A skill can also include other files, such as examples or reference material, that the instructions refer to.

Here's an example of a simple skill:

---
name: product-descriptions
description: Write or rewrite product descriptions for the online store. Use when asked to create, edit or improve a product description.
---

# Product descriptions

- Write between 60 and 100 words
- Start with the main benefit to the customer, not the product name
- Use a friendly, confident tone and US spelling
- End with one line about materials or care

To add a skill, click Add skill, enter your skill and save.

Write a good description

The Assistant uses the description to decide when to load a skill, so it's the most important part of the skill:

  • Say what the skill does and when to use it - For example, "Use when asked to create, edit or improve a product description."
  • Use the words your team would use when asking for that task.
  • Keep each skill to one kind of task - A skill with a narrow, clear purpose is easier for the Assistant to match than one that covers several tasks.
